In
an interview with the officer in charge of the Business Advisory Centre of
NBSSI in Akropong, Mad. Jane Gyekye told the ISD News Desk that the committee
for the MSE had been put in place way back in June 2012 to help accomplish government
efforts to bridge the gap of unemployment challenges in the society.
She
said it is government’s objective to empower the youth especially women to set
up their individual businesses so as to earn a living. Mad Gyekye explained
that in the past, the BAC have been organizing capacity, management and
technical trainings for small groups in the various communities within the
municipality. These capacity and training programmes falls within domains such
as gari processing, palm oil, soap making, fruit juice processing,
hairdressing, tailoring, shoemaking, catering services and others.
She
stressed that the current programme (SME) under the eagle eye of the
Sub-Committee is a laudable idea put in place by government and it would go a
long way to put food on the table in many homes. She also underlined the fact
that the objective of the programme is also to empower women to be self
employed in order to abstain from social vices like prostitution and many others.
Meanwhile, she outlined some of the groups which chalked tremendous successes in the various communities under his outfit as Brightness Association, Milenovisi, Queen Soap Makers Association, Asasekokor Soap Industry, Mile 14 Gari Processing Asenema Gari processing and many others. She however lamented that the scope of her outfit’s coverage is so vast and posses a lot of challenges in their quest to reach out to the less privilege areas. She therefore appeal to the Municipal Assembly as well as to the government to come to their aid by providing a means of transport so that they can reach out to the various communities in order to help government achieve its Millennium goal and better still, THE BETTER GHANA AGENDA.
