MY FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL AT AKROPONG MUNICIPAL

This year’s ‘My First Day at School’ at Akropong Akuapem was organized by the Ghana Education Service with the auspices of the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly. A high powered delegation from the Municipal Ghana Education Service led by its Municipal Director (GES) Reverend J.A Kissi-Twum visited most Basic Schools within the Municipality.

The District Director of Education was accompanied by Mrs. Eunice Asiedu Ameyaw assembly woman of Aseseeso, Miss Gyadu GES welfare coordinator, the Public Relation Officer Mr. Larry Boahen and ISD News Desk. The team first visited Attabui D/A primary school where the team on their arrival met the school children cleaning and weeding their classrooms and compound respectively. The kindergarten and primary one pupils were assembled for their toffees and biscuits, Mrs. Ameyaw advised the children on cleanliness and the importance of education. She said they should inculcate the habit of keeping themselves neat at all times by taking their baths at least twice daily, brush their teeth thoroughly, keep their clothes well washed and keep their hands washed before and after meals. She also told them to influence their peers who are not schooling to come to school.

In an interview with some of the school children, who told the team that they walk long distance to school and they become quite tired on reaching school and hitherto affects them during lessons. The headmaster of Attabui D.A primary school briefed the team that the school lack adequate classrooms and that resulted in some of the students to have lessons under trees. Meanwhile, the GETFUND project has been completed and yet to be commissioned. He however uses the platform to appeal to the authority to hand over the project to the school to help solve the problem of accommodation.

Interestingly at New Asuoyaa the team was briefed by the Head teacher of the Roman Catholic Primary School that the school is faced with some challenges. He said both teachers and pupils live some distance from the school and it has been having a serious telling effect on academic work as far as attendance and punctuality is concerned. He said he had organized transport that brings both teachers and pupils to and from the school. He complained to the team that one of the classrooms is currently being use as a church for the community even during schools hours. However, if such situation arises, the entire school had to join them until the church session is over.

DISASTER


 
SITUATIONAL REPORT
 
LITTLE OVER ONE YEAR OLD 
DIED IN HOUSEHOLD FIRE

The household number W.115 near the public toilet at Aboasa an area in Akropong Akuapem slept in an outrageous and a sad mood around 7 P.M last night.

The story had it that after the evening meal, Madam Asor a mother of four left her children aged five, three, two, a year and two months respectively in their single room occupied by a group of nine people to sleep so that she could go to see to her fried egg business at the road side. A short while, the eldest boy age 5years came to inform their mother that the room was in flames. The mother did not take him serious and continued with her business. Later, the entire neighborhood was alarmed as people started trooping to the scene amidst shouting and wailing.

In an interview with an eye witness name Ebe, said he was in his compound next to the disaster
scene and he saw smoke coming from the ceiling as well as the cracking of wood as in flames, he quickly dashed to the place to find out for himself. He narrated that as he reached the house he heard the crying and wailing of children in the room, though the fame was so intensive, he mustered courage and enter the room to rescue the three children crying. According to him, the fire had already engulfed and burnt the fourth one name Kwaku a one year two months old baby to death. Meanwhile, two years old, Kwaku Ofori a brother to the decease also sustain a first degree burns and since been rushed to the hospital at Akropong.

He said as the fire was escalating he tried to save the baby as he was also trapped in the fire but he managed to escaped. However, another young man by name Zibotey later joined him to fight the fire as they fetched water from the surrounding houses to combat it before others came later. He lamented that by the time the fire service had arrived at the scene the baby, the room and its belongings had burnt beyond recognition.

In an interview with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Deputy Zonal Officer Mr. Albert Oboa Larbi, said he verified from a close source that the disaster was caused by a candle light. He added that the house in question had been disconnected by the Electricity Company for some time now hence had resorted to candle and other source of light energy. He also told the ISD News Desk that NADMO is doing all that it could to extend some assistant in the form of blankets, mattresses and clothing to the disaster victims.

NADMO HOLDS BRIEFING FOR ITS DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAM

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) held its maiden meeting for district Platform Members at the District Assembly Hall. The primary motive of the meeting was to find possible and lasting solution to the prevailing disaster prone areas as well as activities that could likely contribute to disaster in the district.

Members took turn to outlined and discussed vividly  themes such as chieftaincy challenges, accident spots within the districts, flood areas, unhealthy human disasters, bush and domestic fires, sanitation challenges and other spots that might trigger disaster within the area.

The house deliberated into detail on accidents which were so rampant within the district. Areas considered for deliberation were Mamfe-Koforidua road, the bad nature of Ayenseso bridge, in the course of deliberation, it came to light that the bridge currently seem like a death trap which could possibly lead to a fatal accident any moment soon. Aseseeso-Koforidua road and its surrounding hills towards Somanya were all discussed and that proper and adequate signs were needed to enhance and alert drivers of a particular spot before reaching it.

Also unhealthy human activities within the district were looked at. The stone wining at Adukrom –Aseseeso road as well as Mamfe stone winning were discussed and it was agreed upon that such activity if not properly checked could expose the road to erosion and adversely leading to a possible disaster in future. However the Tsotso accident prone area came to the fore and the house came to a consensus that the district Assembly need to liaise with Tipper Truck Association to get the place filled to reduce the menace. In addition, it was suggested that bamboo grooves should be planted around the place to serve as barricade for vehicles to run into in case of emergency.

Present at the meeting were Nana Ansah Sasraku III- Mamfehene, Aseseesohene, The District Coordinating Director, the police, the Fire Service, NGO Representative, Christian council among others.
